The importance of keeping the big ones: harvest slot limits and marine protected areas for the management of Panulirus argus in the Caribbean

Butler M and Gnanalingam G. The importance of keeping the big ones: harvest slot limits and marine protected areas for the management of Panulirus argus in the Caribbean. Research Permit and Reporting System

The Caribbean spiny lobster supports some of the region’s most economically valued fisheries, but the average size of lobsters has decreased which is problematic because they contribute disproportionately to reproduction. Novel management is needed to conserve large breeding lobsters, such as slot limits & MPAs. We studied size-specific fecundity of DRTO lobsters, but found no evidence of senescence.
