The story of the Fairview Colored School is one that parallels the struggles of African-Americans in the South to resist the prejudices ofthe past and to better themselves and their community through discipline, hard work, and education. The physical history embodied in the Fairview School site is worthy of preservation, celebration, and repurposing to educate new generations of schoolchildren, black and white, about the perseverance and determination embodied in the Fairview ethic: "I will not rest until my good is better and my better is best." Historic preservation goals for the Fairview School include: Rehabilitation of the First Grade Classroom building to its 1945 appearance and its reuse as the central historic resource in the interpretive plan for the Fairview School site; stabilization of the Rosenwald site and future construction of a community garden that reinterprets the floor plan of the building as garden plots and raised beds; stabilization of other site features, including stone retaining walls, concrete steps, privy pits and remnant foundations, and installation of interpretive markers explaining their significance; strategic improvements to increase compliance with the various Codes and Ordinances; upgrades to site access, including paved drives, on-site parking, and enhanced handicapped accessibility to the historic resources on the site; construction of new restroom facilities and re-establishing electrical service and water; restoration of the Fairview landscape to its appearance in the period of significance, 1925-1954. This inventory was funded in part by a 2015 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (grant number P15AF00076) and a subgrant to the City of Rome, Georgia (project number GA-15-032). Funding allowed for the City of Rome to partner with the Fairview and E.S. Brown Heritage Corporation to produce a preservation plan for the historic African American Fairview School, located in Cave Spring, Floyd County, Georgia.
