Georeferenced Survey of the Historic Architecture of New Marigny, Seventh and Eighth Wards, New Orleans, Louisiana

This project has had several aims. One aim is to provide of this survey is to provide an overview of the historic development of the New Marigny survey area. Our study area includes the Seventh and Eighth Wards of New Orleans. Using nineteenth century maps and twentieth century aerial photography, we document the settlement and urban development of the survey area from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century. The history and social significance of the area are reviewed. We provide an architectural history of the 7th and 8th Wards. In this section we discuss the variety of house types and their cultural significance. The base-line for our survey is the 1933 aerial photographic coverage of Orleans Parish. We have completed a 100 percent sampling of the architecture for that year. The sample is broken down into its major house types and sub-types, and their distributions. The proportions of shotgun houses, Creole cottages and other types are mapped and explained. This is done on a square-by-square basis. A total of approximately 590 squares were sampled for this project. As a substitution for the street-level digital video surveys previously supplied by professor Kennedy in previous grant years, we have provided an architectural history of the New Orleans townhouse. Many townhouses were constructed in the New Marigny historic district, but our history involves the development from the late decades of the eighteenth century, through the beginnings of the twentieth century, throughout the entire city. [We have continued to develop] our Unified Digital Data Base for the Architectural History of New Orleans Historic Neighborhoods. We have continued to expand and to improve the various layers of our developing Unified Digital Data Base. This year we have begun the process of georeferencing and integrating the various series of Sanborn maps into single layers. This permits the user to scan across the entire city for one Sanborn set, as if it were a single map of the city. (From "Overview of this report.")
