This study was funded in part by a 2012 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the California State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 06-12-41911) and a subgrant to the City of Los Angeles, California (project number CA-12-029). Funding allowed for the city to hire a consultant to develop a city-wide historic context statement for identifying and evaluating resources associated with the Chinese-American history of Los Angeles in conjunction with the SurveyLA project. The historic context statement elaborates on the significant themes relevant to the contributions of the Chinese to historical and cultural development of Los Angeles beginning in the 1880s to 1980. The context establishes periods of historical significance, identify associated property types with their character defining and associative features, and establish evaluation criteria and integrity thresholds for important property types sufficient to provide a framework for evaluating individual resources and historic districts for the National, California, and local registration programs. Los Angeles, California is a Certified Local Government.
