Quantifying the carbon storage capacity of eelgrass in regional beds.
Novak A, Colarusso P, Simpson J, Pelletier P. Quantifying the carbon storage capacity of eelgrass in regional beds.. Research Permit and Reporting System
The primary research objective is to determine if eutrophication negatively effects ecosystem function and carbon accretion in eelgrass meadows. Recent research has demonstrated that seagrass sequesters large quantities of carbon, primarily in the sediments with in the meadow. The origin of the carbon in these sediments include cast leaves and organic particles that may settle out from the water column to the bottom due to the physical presence of the plants.
