ABSTRACT: The known distribution of the two species of Scopelophila in North, Central, and South America is summarized. Scopelophila cataractae (Mitt.) Broth. is reported as new to North Carolina and is redescribed. Tortula williamsii Bartr. and Merceyopsis mexicana Bartr. are placed in synonymy with S. cataractae. The name Scopelophila (Mitt.) Lindb. is retained and Merceya Schimp. reduced to synonymy.
