Shenandoah National Park showcases the geology and high elevation hydrology of the Appalachians, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. The high elevation ecosystems and headwaters preserved in the park help contribute to the ecological integrity of valuable cold-water resources downstream. The headwater streams in the park are comprised of three major river drainages that flow to the Chesapeake Bay. A variety of water resources at Shenandoah have been studied for over 30 years.
