From July 25 to August 5, 2016 a team of National Park Service archaeologists conducted helicopter-supported pedestrian survey in the northwestern portion of Gates of the Arctic National Park and the northeastern portion of Noatak National Preserve. The crew surveyed transects totaling more than 200 kilometers (130 miles) over the course of 11 days, covered over 98 hectares (244 acres) and documented 17 new and six previously recorded archaeological sites. Sites discovered were predominantly lithic scatters, including isolated flakes and tools, single concentrations of lithic debris, as well as multiple, discrete concentrations within a single site. Other sites included features such as cairns, tent rings, or cache pits. Most sites were found to be in good condition with few documented threats or disturbances. Recommendations for future work in the study area are provided.
