Carotenoids in Lichens from the United States of America and Mexico

SUMMARY: Column and thin-layer chromatography revealed the presence of the following carotenoids in the thalli of 106 lichen species (132 specimens) from United States and Mexico: a-carotene. B-carotene, E-carotene, y-carotene, B-cryptoxanthin, B-isocryptoxanthin, rubixanthin, lutein, 3’-epilutein, zeaxanthin, B-carotene diepoxide, eschscholtzxanthin, lycopene-5,6-epoxide, alloxanthin, physalien, lutein epoxide, antheraxanthin, echinenone, 3’-hydroxyechinenone, canthaxanthin, idoxanthin, a-doradexanthin, astaxanthin, neoxanthin, microxanthin, heteroxanthin, siphonein, violaxanthin, mutatoxanthin, aurochrome, auroxanthin, luteoxanthin, neochrome, cryptoflavin, flavoxanthin, rhodoxanthin, capsochrome, apo-6’-lycopenal, B-apo-10’-carotenal, 3-hydroxy-B-apo-10’-carotenal, bixin, B-citraurin, azafrin, crocetindial and semi-a-carotenone. The total content of carotenoids ranged from 10.9 (Peltigera collina) to 93.0 pg g-1 dry weight (Peltigera canina No. 71).
