Visibility monitoring has shown that in excess of 902 of the time scenic vistas are affected by man-made pollution at all National Park Service (NPS) monitoring locations within the lower 48 United States. Even in remote areas such as Grand Canyon National Park,- visitors sometimes cannot see the opposite canyon rim or the canyon depths because of poor visibility. At Yosemite National Park, smoke from fires sometimes obscures the view of the well known massive cliffs and domes. In Shenandoah National Park, the "'Blue Ridge" often appears an unnatural white, gray, or brown, and in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the natural haze is usually overwhelmed by man-made haze.
