Report on the Collection of Aquatic Insects at Bandelier National Monument, 1-3 August, 1997

Background: Lisa Carter of the USGS, Upper Rio Grande River NAWQA Study Unit, collected a UV light trap sample from the USGS gaging station on Rito de los Frijoles at Bandelier National Monument on 2 August, 1996. After identifying the aquatic insects in this sample, we discovered a single male of the micro-caddisfly, Ithytrichia mexicana Harris and Contreras-Ramos (Insecta: Trichoptera). This male represented the fourth known specimen of this species and is a new state record for New Mexico. The female of this species is undescribed. Currently, we are working on a taxonomic review of the Nearctic species in the genus Ithytrichia. To complete our research, we need to collect and describe the female. Results: A single female of I. mexicana was identified from the collections, increasing the number of known specimens to five. The female was illustrated and is now being described for the first time. The description and illustrations will complete the manuscript entitled “Review of the Nearctic Species of Ithytrichia (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae)” which is authored by Moulton, Harris, and Slusark. The manuscript will be submitted for publication in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington in early 1998. After publication, a reprint of the article will be provided to the BNM. A total of 41 taxa of aquatic insects were identified form the samples. A list of these taxa is attached.
