Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Assateague Island National Seashore

2003-2010. Field data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Assateague Island National Seashore

This reference is an assemblage of field data collected as part the baseline vegetation inventory for the park unit. Typical files here are vegetation plot data, accuracy assessment data, field photos, PDF showing locations of vegetation plots and accuracy assessment data, and other data for this type. A sampling scheme was devised by the ESRI-AIS-TNC team, and plot data collection was conducted during the summer of 1994 by ecologists from TNC and from the Maryland Natural Heritage Program. Twenty-four National Vegetation Classification alliances occurring within the park were identified and described in detail. Field work to conduct an accuracy assessment of the original map was carried out in 1998. Not surprisingly, accuracy of the map of this pilot project was low, an estimated 44%. The results led to a discussion of the reasons for the low accuracy of the original map. There were many contributing factors to low accuracy, but one main issue was that the vegetation classification was developed concurrently with mapping, as opposed to prior to mapping. As a result, the evolving nature of the classification resulted in a varying understanding of the types by photointerpreters.
