Executive summary: "The subject of this Historic Structure Report (HSR) is the Constitution Elm Monument, a component of the Corydon Capitol State Historic Site (Corydon SHS) located in Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana, which is managed by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites Corporation (ISMHS) on behalf of the State of Indiana. The structure is located on the north side of West High Street, approximately 270 feet west of its intersection with North Capitol Avenue (SR 337) and approximately 250 feet east of Water Street, which runs parallel to Big Indian Creek to the west. The Constitution Monument is a contributing resource to the Corydon Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1972 under Criteria A and C. The purpose of this report is to provide the ISMHS and personnel of the Corydon SHS with a compilation of all known historical information regarding the Constitution Elm Monument, as well as a comprehensive record of the structure’s character and conditions. Upon this framework and in consideration of the significance of the structure, the report also makes recommendations for appropriate management, interpretation, and maintenance. In total, the report serves as a basis for appropriate and efficient decision-making in relation to future stewardship of the site."
