In response to the recent detection and spread of White-nose Syndrome (WNS) among bat species, NPS has service-wide management interest in identifying populations at risk within potentially-affected NPS park units. To date WNS has not been detected at OCMU, but the disease has expanded southward into GA in recent years (see below). As a result, in 2013 OCMU received funding to update bat inventories. This project implementing summer bat inventories aimed to document presence and an index of relative abundance of bat species within the existing monument property and expansion area. This project also involved establishing monitoring routes to be included in routine bat monitoring efforts being conducted by the state.
