Survey of Historic Donaldsonville, Louisiana

Funding allowed for the resurveying of the Donaldsonville Historic District in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. From introduction: "Founded in 1806, the Donaldsonville Historic District is significant in the area of architecture and history because of its fine collection of structures of pre-Civil War era buildings to interesting buildings through the 1950s. The varied collection of building styles such as Italianate Creole, French, Spanish, English and a wonderful array of gingerbread accents, typical of Germanic cottages, become even more unique when installed on slave cabins and sharecropper homes. The blend of styles and wide array of sizes, emphasizes the need to share our treasured district to light. While Donaldsonville is similar in character to other River Region districts, the size and scope of the existing district boasts over 400 sites. The influences of varied ethnicities and location between Baton Rouge and New Orleans made for a convenient center for all. The district is also important to record and promote due to the formal city planning of the 1800s on a grid, which is unusual in its scope." Funding for this project was provided in part through a fiscal year 2012 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Donaldsonville (project number LA-12-013) administered by the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 22-12-41925) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
