Roald Amundsen was born in Borge, Norway in 1872. In 1905, Amundsen and his six-man crew became the first to successfully sail the Northwest Passage on the Goja, a 72-foot herring boat. During their travels, the crew studied the magnetic North Pole and encountered a band of Nitsilik. The Nitsilik helped the Norwegian crew adapt to the Arctic environment. After a difficult passage through the Simpson Strait, the explorers arrived at Fort Yukon. The journey continued inland to Eagle, where Amundsen was finally able to send a telegram notice of the first successful venture through the Northwest Passage.
