From introduction: "BATL -The Battle of Atlanta Commemoration Org., lnc. working together with The City of Atlanta Urban Design Commission and The Atlanta Parks Department to satisfy a Georgia Department Natural Resources State Historic Preservation Office grant, requested Bryant Art Direction to prepare a report on the history of the battlefield monuments to the two generals who died during The Battle of Atlanta. This report will be used as part of a complete assessment of the McPherson and Walker Monuments in order to develop a plan for the restoration of the monuments... The Monuments were placed over 100 years ago to mark the area where U.S. General James Birdseye McPherson and C.S. General William H. T. Walker were killed in the early minutes of The Battle of Atlanta. Much has been written about the historic battle and the events that led to the death of these two men a little less than a mile apart on July 22, 1864. The monuments resemble each other by design and though they were built 30 years apart, numerous accounts say that they were meant to be seen as `'bookends.'" Funding for this project was provided in part through a fiscal year 2011 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Atlanta (project number GA-11-009) administered by the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 13-11-31917) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Atlanta, Georgia is a Certified Local Government.
