Menominee Opera House Renovation Master Plan, Menominee, Michigan
HGA Architects and Quinn Evans Architects. 2008. Menominee Opera House Renovation Master Plan, Menominee, Michigan. Menominee Opera House Committee, Inc.; Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries. Menominee, Michigan
From introduction: "This Restoration Master Plan is the results of on site investigations by a team of architectural, historical, structural and theatre professionals. The final design outlined in this Restoration Master Plan was derived through a series of workshops and presentation with the Menominee Opera House Building Committee. The enclosed design concepts were completed within the Secretary of Interiors Standards for Historic Buildings; and Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries State Historic Preservation Office... When it opened in 1902, the Menominee Opera House was the pride and joy of the city, a visible symbol of the economic and cultural status of this town built on the timber industry. Built during the golden age of traveling theater in America, the Opera House adapted itself to the changing state of entertainment in the city, shifting to motion pictures in the 1920s, community theater in the 1930s, and back to motion pictures in the post World War 11 era. Devastated by a fire in 1950, the Opera House was frequently on the brink of demolition, but always managed to escape the fate of many historic theaters during the latter half of the twentieth century. It was rescued from demolition in the late 1970s and mothballed until a small but dedicated community group brought it closer to restoration in the early years of the twenty-first century." Funding for this project was provided in part through a fiscal year 2007 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Menominee Opera House Committee, Inc. (project number MI-07-031) administered by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 26-07-21626) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Menominee, Michigan is a Certified Local Government.
