Gordon Bettles arrived in the Yukon Territory in 1888 after giving up on silver claims in Montana for the prospect of gold on the Fortymile River. Soonafter, Bettles and his mining partner moved on to the Kuskokwim in southwestern Alaska, but they did not strike gold. Later, Bettles opened a trading station with fur trader Al Mayo at the confluence of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers. With the beginning of the Klondike-Alaska Gold Rush, Bettles expanded his trading post into the G.C. Bettles & Company, purchased several Yukon River steamboats, and later built posts at Bergman and Bettles (now Old Bettles).
