Paddlewheel steamboats were the main source of transportation along the Yukon River for early pioneers, trappers, traders, and prospectors traveling to the Yukon and Alaska. In 1986, the first steamboat (owned by the Alaska Commercial Company) made its journey along the Yukon River for trade. At the height of the Klondike-Alaska Gold Rush, 100 or more steamboats brought people, equipment, and supplies along the Yukon from Dawson City. Paddlewheel steamboats continued to transport cargo along the Yukon after the gold rush, but they inevitably fell out of use by 1955.
