Subsistence lifestyles declined among Alaska Native communities with the arrival of Europeans. However, traditional subsistence practices still play an important role in Alaska Native culture and lifeways, particularly in rural communities. In 1980, Congress passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA), which preserves lands in Alaska for subsistence use. Lands within Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve are used year-round for hunting, fishing, and trapping.
