The purpose of this Vegetation Management Recommendation document is to guide the rehabilitation of the historic landscape character of Fort Andrews, in order to accommodate safe, sustainable, and enjoyable use of the island. The document includes recommended maintenance practices, a series of vegetation maintenance tasks within specific fort areas, a calendar for maintenance practices, and related appendices. This report is a collaborative effort between the Boston Harbor Islands Alliance, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the National Park Service. Located in Boston Harbor and in the Town of Hull within Norfolk County, Peddocks Island covers 210 acres and consists of five drumloid hills. Peddocks is one of over thirty islands within the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area and is owned and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The eastern two drumlins, referred to as East Head contain the remains of Fort Andrews, one of several coastal fortifications on the Boston Harbor islands. Built in the early 1900s and expanded during World War II, the fort consists of several Colonial Revival style buildings, mortar batteries, and a chapel. Three batteries, Rice, McCook, and Bumpus, as well as a Battery Commander’s Fire Control Station, stand near the top of the northern drumlin, where there are open views to Georges Island, Boston Light and the Outer Islands, and the tip of Hull.
