From introduction: "The following is a comprehensive final report on a proposed Historic Mining District of Iron County, Wisconsin. The main goal of this report is to address the six points of criteria contained in the Iron County Mining District Outline, with a particular emphasis on substantiation of historic extant properties associated with Iron County mining. Additional sections of this report that follow include detailed research for each site and recommendations on the District perspective. The six categories of criteria established for site selection: 1. historical significance; 2. site in relation to the district's theme; 3. public safety and accessibility to site visitation; 4. site integrity; 5. potential public interest in the site; 6. sites with best opportunity to reveal the impact of area iron mining to the public. The five sites constituting the district which this report will examine in more detail are: Hurley, Gile, Montreal, Pence and the Plummer Head frame." Funding for this project was provided in part through a 1994 Historic Preservation Fund grant to Iron County (project number WI-94-12) administered by the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 55-94-90067) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
