From introduction: "In October 2012 the Planning Department received a Certified Local Government grant from the California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) to prepare a Historic Context Statement (HCS) about the development of San Francisco's neighborhood commercial districts. In addition to the HCS, the Planning Department convened a working group of experts to develop design guidelines for accessibility and seismic upgrades to historically significant neighborhood commercial buildings. The historic design guidelines along with the HCS will provide the owners, tenants, and city agencies a better understanding of what architectural elements should be retained and the materials and styles that should be considered for alterations to existing store fronts. The purpose of this document is to provide guidance for work to historic buildings subject to the Mandatory Soft Story Retrofit Ordinance and assistance with developing an accessibility strategy for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990." Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2013 Historic Preservation Fund grant to City of San Francisco (project number CA-13-027) administered by the California State Historic Preservation Office (grant number P13AF00087) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
