Factors conferring resilience of eelgrass (Zostera marina) to destruction from green crabs (Carcinus maenas) on Mt. Desert Island

Farrell A and Disney JE. Factors conferring resilience of eelgrass (Zostera marina) to destruction from green crabs (Carcinus maenas) on Mt. Desert Island. Research Permit and Reporting System

We monitored four sites around Mt. Desert Island for eelgrass density and crab abundance in 2016: Hadley Point, Berry Cove, Ship Harbor, and Wonderland. Eelgrass density is on the increase at Hadley Point and Berry Cove. Wonderland and Ship Harbor, had significantly lower eelgrass density than in 2014. Crab abundance did not vary between sites. We plan to continue to monitor Frenchman Bay in comparison to Ship Harbor and Wonderland to determine contributors to shifts in eelgrass density.
