Common Bond Preservation

Abstract: At the behest of the State Historic Preservation Office of the South Dakota State Historical Society, Common Bond Preservation (CBP) completed a reconnaissance level architectural survey of McPherson County, South Dakota. The goal of the project was to update information and clarify eligibility on previously surveyed properties, and to locate additional properties potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Any property that appeared to be 40 years old, historically significant, and retained integrity was recorded on an Historic Sites Inventory Reconnaissance Form, and documented through site drawings and digital photography. At project completion, 168 resources were surveyed, including buildings, cemeteries, bridges, culverts and one object. Surveyed properties consisted of both rural and “urban” structures, including residences, schools, commercial buildings, churches, farmsteads, barns and other agricultural resources. The majority of the resources date to the early and mid-twentieth century and are vernacular in nature. The project team evaluated the integrity of these properties and identified potentially significant resources for inclusion in the National Register. Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2014 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (project number SD-14-015, grant number P14AF00033) administered by the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
