From introduction: "This survey and evaluation project was undertaken by the Marion Historic Preservation Commission in FY 2009-10. The primary objective of the project was the completion of an intensive survey and evaluation of the architectural resources within an area along both sides of 6th Avenue between 1st Street on the west and 9th Street on the east between the former Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad right-of-way on the north and the north side of 5th Avenue on the south. This corridor constitutes the earliest main east-west thoroughfare through Marion before a shift in bridge location after World War 11 diverted the main traffic entirely along 7th Avenue. This area is west of the main commercial district in Marion, with the properties in the study area primarily residential in nature. Two modem commercial properties (a McDonald's fast food restaurant and Indian Creek Mall) are located at the extreme west end of the survey area. There are 92 main buildings within this study area. The ultimate purpose of the study was to develop historic contexts appropriate to the historical development of this area within the City of Marion; survey and evaluate the historic architectural resources in this area; and identify any individual buildings and/or historic districts eligible for the National Register within this area. The City of Marion and the Marion Historic Preservation Commission undertook this study in order to continue the Commission's efforts to survey historic areas of the city and identify and recognize the important historic properties and districts in the city. The current study was recommended by a previous Planning for Preservation study that encompassed the whole of the city and identified areas and neighborhoods of the city warranting intensive survey and evaluation. The survey area encompasses a portion of the original town plat of Marion (on the west side of that plat), Whipple's Addition, Sutzin's 1st Addition, part of Sutzin's 2nd Addition, part of Greene's lst Addition, and irregular survey area and smaller parcel plats added to the city's west side through the years." Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2009 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Marion (project number IA-09-056) administered by the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 19-09-21840) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Marion, Iowa is a Certified Local Government.
