Introduction: "In the spring of 2009 the Iowa Falls Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) was awarded a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant to update the Intensive Survey and Evaluation project that was conducted in the community during 1991 -1992. The re-survey was designed to cover only the central business district with research focusing on the years 1940- 1960. This report is the product of the 2009-2010 re-survey. Information gathered during the 1990s project is included in this report to provide a complete picture of Iowa Falls' commercial development. Additional information about this project can be found in the Summary of Identification and Evaluation Methods section of this report. One of the most important things to know before beginning a study of Iowa Falls (population 5,193) is that it is a "market town", not the county seat of Hardin County. The county seat is Eldora (population 3,035), twenty miles to the southeast near the center of the county. It is unusual for an Iowa county to have two towns of the approximately the same size. A similar situation is found in Lee County in far southeast Iowa which is home to Fort Madison and Keokuk. The two are relatively equal in population, and in this case, both have county courthouses." Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2009 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Iowa Falls (project number IA-09-055) administered by the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 19-09-21840) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Iowa Falls, Iowa is a Certified Local Government.
