Intensive Survey and Evaluation of the Downtown Commercial District, City of Manning, Carroll County, Iowa
Tallgrass Historians L.C., Rogers LD, Price JA. 2013. Intensive Survey and Evaluation of the Downtown Commercial District, City of Manning, Carroll County, Iowa. Manning Historic Preservation Commission; State Historical Society of Iowa. Manning, Iowa
From abstract: "A total of 54 buildings were inventoried with the project survey area, with an additional six properties inventoried outside of that survey area because of local interest and to determine if the district boundary should extend south of Highway 141. Of the total 60 properties, three had been previously inventoried. All of the properties were evaluated and/or re-evaluated for the current study for contributing or non-contributing status in a commercial district and/or individual eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. It was determined that a National Register-eligible historic commercial district is present, with the strongest boundary encompassing both sides of Main Street from 6th to 2nd streets (excluding the block between 4th and 6th on the east side of Main Street) and includes one property along Center Street and three properties on the north side of 3rd Street. Within this boundary are 22 contributing buildings and 8 non-contributing buildings, or 30 total properties... The recommended period of significance for the commercial district nomination is from 1885 (date of the oldest extant building in the district; 307 Main Street) to the 1960s (or the 50-year cut-off for National Register consideration). The end date of the period of significance should be set at the time of nomination." Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2012 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Manning (project number IA-12-051) administered by the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 19-12-41922) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Manning, Iowa is a Certified Local Government.
