From report: "Lead, like many historic towns, once had painted signs lining the streets.3 Many of the grand structures that hosted these signs were destroyed by subsistence, fire, and mining demolition, leaving only photographs. Through archival photo research, visual inspection, and web browsing, Lead has five remaining visible ghost signs. There are an additional two non-visible signs that are recoverable due to being under the less durable modern latex paint." Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2011 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Lead (project number SD-11-013) administered by the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 46-11-31948) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Lead, South Dakota is a Certified Local Government.
