Western Regional Climate Center Final Report & Recommendations for the Pacific Island Climate Monitoring Network National Park Service 2012-15

Simeral D, McCurdy G, Redmond K, Fearon M, Sisson E. 2016. Western Regional Climate Center Final Report & Recommendations for the Pacific Island Climate Monitoring Network National Park Service 2012-15

In collaboration with the National Park Service (NPS) Pacific Island Network (PACN) Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M), the Western Regional Climate Center (WRCC) installed a network of long-term weather/climate monitoring stations across the PACN I&M network. In addition to deployment of the monitoring network, the WRCC carried out the following in accordance with the task agreement: data telemetry and data management procedures; providing near real-time data access to the public via the Internet; training NPS staff on maintenance and operational procedures; field maintenance; technical consultations; and summarization of station data for annual reporting. The network will provide critical baseline weather and climate data to meet PACN monitoring objectives to characterize climatic change/variability and to better understand patterns associated with climatic extremes, such as, drought, extreme precipitation events, and tropical cyclone activity. In application, the network will enable PACN management to characterize a critical physical component of the park ecosystems and provide valuable information on weather conditions in support of management decisions and public safety.
