From introduction: "This project is the third phase of an effort to survey the historic properties within and adjoining the original Cortez townsite. In the first two phases of the project, the City of Cortez surveyed the properties along Montezuma Avenue and a few properties located south of the Avenue and within the original Cortez townsite. This project addresses the remaining area located between Montezuma Avenue and Main Street within the original townsite. It is funded by a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant (#CO-14-015). The survey results contribute to the knowledge and appreciation of the history of the development of Cortez. The City will use the survey data to guide future planning, development and interpretation projects. The project results also provide valuable information for property owners contemplating restoration or rehabilitation of their historic property... This survey area is located within the original townsite, in a transitional area between the primarily residential neighborhood of Montezuma Avenue and the commercial businesses on Main Street. The area contains a mix of homes, churches and commercial properties. Five properties within the survey were not recorded because they had been developed within the past 30 years. Nine other properties within the survey area were documented as part of the previous, Phase II, survey. A parking lot was also excluded from the survey. Thirty-three survey forms were completed for the area." Project funding was provided in part by a 2014 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Cortez (project number CO-14-015) administered by the Colorado State Historic Preservation Office (grant number P14AF00031) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
