This report begins an effort to establish "as definite a history of the cabin as is possible." Following interpretive duty at the Memorial Building at Abraham Lincoln National Historical Park, the author identifies a responsibility to know the history of the log cabin and its relationship to President Abraham Lincoln. The report presents a known history of the structure, including the period when the logs were dismantled, stored, shipped, and reassembled. It also describes, analyzes, and illustrates the numbering system of the logs. An effort is made to identify the loss and replacement of logs using photographs and the cabin's itinerary from 1860 to 1911. Personal accounts of John A. Davenport, one time owner of the cabin, and John C. Creal, whose father purchased part of the farm in 1830, attempt to specify the placement of the cabin. The remaining task, as stated by the author, is to fill in the gaps in the history of the cabin through photographs, newspaper publications, and files from the Lincoln Farm Association. This report includes drawings of logs showing present markings.
