Abstract: "Following the formation of a local historic preservation commission and its designation as a Certified Local Government (CLG), grant funding was secured to complete a Planning for Preservation project in Newton, Iowa. A preservation planning project is an excellent first-step for a new commission because it creates a base of information from which the commission can proceed as they undertake the variety of tasks involved in identifying, evaluating, recording, and preserving the historic resources significant to their community. The Newton Planning for Preservation project, conducted from August of 2009 through May of 2010, aimed to educate the commissioners and interested citizens about that process and to lay a foundation for their work. The education portion of the planning project was completed through a series of three workshops, which used the commercial downtown as an example from which to teach the basic elements of identification, evaluation, and recordation. Further, the project required the development of historic contexts from which the community's resources could be evaluated for significance and the planning project identified potential resources for further study." Project funding was provided in part by a 2009 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Newton (project number IA-09-057) administered by Iowa State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 19-09-21840) administered by the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Newton, Iowa is a Certified Local Government.
