From abstract: "The Reconnaissance-Level Architectural Survey of Sanborn County, South Dakota was conducted by Cultural Heritage Research Services, Inc. (CHRS, Inc.) The purpose of the project was to determine how many properties in Sanborn County are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The project involved identifying and documenting such properties. The Reconnaissance-Level Architectural Survey was sponsored by the South Dakota State Historical Society... The project area for this survey was the entire county of Sanborn. The county is located in east central South Dakota. It is bordered on the north by Beadle County, to the east by Miner County, to the south by Hanson and Davison Counties and to the west by Aurora and Jerauld Counties. Sanborn County consists of 569 square miles (364,159 acres) (City-Data 2010). The county is divided into 16 townships with four incorporated towns: Artesian, Forestburg, Letcher and the county seat of Woonsocket. The survey identified 32 properties that are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. These properties were determined eligible because they retained integrity of materials, design, workmanship, location, setting, feeling and association. Properties that are farms or ranches had to have a majority of their outbuildings intact. A majority of the structures documented are residential properties that are vernacular in design. There are a few properties located in the towns that are designed in high styles. The properties surveyed range in construction date from ca. 1890s to ca. 1950s, with a majority of the properties being from the 1920s and 1930s." Project funding was provided in part by a 2010 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (project number SD-10-026, grant number 46-10-21948) administered by the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
