2009 Vernacular Architecture Forum: Field Guide for the 30th Annual Meeting, Butte, Montana, June 10-13

This "field guide" features eight essays on Montana architecture and notes and maps for three interpretive tour: a Butte Day tour; a Northwest Tour including Anaconda, Philipsburg, Granite, Deer Lodge; and a Southeast Tour through Pony, Virginia City, Nevada City, Alder-Laurin and Twin Bridges. The eight essays are "The Nature-Built Landscape: Geological Underpinnings of Butte" by Richard I. Gibson; "Mining Industry Foundations of the Built Environments of Butte and Anaconda" by Dr. Fredric L. Quivik; "Butte, the Gibraltar of American Labor: An Overview of Butte Labor History, 1878-2008" by Brian Shovers; "'Making Good': Socialist Government in Butte, 1911-1915" by Dr. Jerry W. Calvert; "Excerpts from Copper Metropolis" by Dr. Mary Murphy; "Butte, 1950-2009: Decline, Loss, and the Rise of Historic Preservation and Cultural Tourism" by Richard I. Gibson; "The Finney House in Nevada City, Montana and the Notion of Heritage Transformation" by Dr. Kingston Win. Heath and Dr. Randall May Heath; and "Breaking Ground for Agriculture: Gallatin Valley, MT" by Dr. Maire O'Neill. Funding for this project was provided in part through a 2007 Preserve America grant to the Montana State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 30-08-PA-4024) administered by the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Preserve America is a federal initiative that encourages and supports community efforts to preserve and enjoy our priceless cultural and natural heritage. The goals of the program include a greater shared knowledge about the nation's past, strengthened regional identities and local pride, increased local participation in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage assets, and support for the economic vitality of our communities.
