In 2015, the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division (NSNSD) received a request to record and analyze acoustic data that would inform Governors Island National Monument (Governors Island) about the state of the acoustic environment in the park. Requestors were particularly interested in quantifying the impact helicopter overflights have on the acoustic environment of the park. This report presents data quantifying the impact of helicopter overflights over Governors Island during two data collection periods in 2015: a 20-day period from September 1 – 20 and a 22-day period from November 10 – December 1. Acoustic data were gathered using a high-quality digital audio recorder to characterize the existing ambient conditions in the project area. These data were collected at two sites thought to be highly impacted by helicopter overflights. Digital audio recorders were placed at these sites to optimize data collection in relation to overflights. Data gathered from the recorders is compared to helicopter overflight data reported by air tour operators in the area.
