This report discusses the response of Redwood Creek to downstream movement of a large load of sediment added since the 1950's. Excess erosion from a combination of timber harvest practices and heavy winter storms caused channel aggradation, with subsequent degradation in upper areas as the sediment wave progresses. Sediment from temporary storage in the channel accounts for about a quarter of the total sediment load but 95 percent of the bedload transported out of the basin. Varying responses in different reaches are described. Data regarding 58 cross sections have been accumulated since 1973, providing long-term records of channel conditions. These show that recovery to pre-existing channel conditions will take many years, with recovery of riparian and aquatic life dependent on these conditions expected to take several decades. It includes 9 figures: profiles; bed elevation changes in relation to channel distance; and pool, flow, and sediment charts.
