From "Methodology": "Le Mars is at the center of America Township, which occupies the east-central portion of Plymouth County in northwest Iowa. The city occupies approximately 6.8 square miles in Township 92 North, Range 45 West. It is the county seat and population center with about thirty-seven percent of the county's 25,000 residents. Le Mars is located on the USGS Le Mars quadrangle. The survey area consists of approximately 30 acres in the city's historic central business district (please see maps on the following pages). Within the survey area boundaries, a street grid aligned with the cardinal directions defines the circulation pattern, the vast majority of parcel boundaries, and thus many buildings' alignment. The Union Pacific Railroad grade 7 travels northeast-southwest across the south edge of the survey area. Approximately 125 resources exist in the survey area, comprised of late nineteenth through late twentieth century commercial buildings characteristic of a county seat's central business district." Project funding was provided in part by a 2011 Historic Preservation Fund grant to City of Le Mars (project number IA-11-054) administered by the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 19-11-31922) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
