This Historic Structure Report (HSR) focuses on two structures within the Boott Mill Complex of Lowell National Historical Park: the Counting House and Mill 6. Renovations at both buildings were completed in 1993. An HSR for the buildings was completed in 1984 and includes detailed history about historical contexts, history of use, and physical changes. However, it doesn't document renovations that were completed in the 1980s and 1990s. This documents contains the text of the 1984 HSR in Chapter 1.2, and it has been updated to document major renovations and to record character-defining features. Building No. 6, the Counting House, facades of Mills No. 1 and No. 2, and the Courtyard of the Boott Cotton Mills-Boott Mills complex represent significant examples of the thinking of the developers of the New England textile industry, the manner of their operation, and the experience of the workers in them. Mills such as these served as models for textile factory development throughout the country. The conservatism of its design, comparatively slight modifications over time, and consistently poor working conditions and climate control capabilities reveals a great deal about the priorities of the owners, constraints places on the managers, and degree of interest in its continuing profitability.
