Bat hibernacula surveys in Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve: 2017 status report

Between January and March of 2017, 15 of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve’s (CRMO) 400+ known caves were surveyed for hibernating bats. This is the fifth year of annual bat hibernation surveys at CRMO. Bats in Arco Tunnel and other hibernacula were identified as Townsend’s big-eared bats (Corynorhinus townsendii) and undifferentiated species of Myotis. Temperature and humidity readings were recorded throughout caves and in the immediate space of hibernating bats. Extreme snow and weather conditions limited the ability of staff to survey as many caves in 2017 they have in other years.
