This is a redacted version of the survey report completed August 2016. From introduction: "American Indian occupation of South Dakota dates back more than 10,000 years. Over this time, countless burials have been made, many within burial mounds or beneath cairns, and often grouped in cemeteries. Since people of European descent began settling in the late 1800s, these unrecorded burials and cemeteries have been gradually degraded through agricultural activities, road building, gravel mining, construction, and other earth-moving activities. These processes, combined with lack of documentation, have made the burial mounds increasingly difficult to identify and protect, especially as development and supporting infrastructure continues to grow. This archaeological and cultural landscape project studied and surveyed previously recorded mortuary archaeological sites within Beadle, Spink, and Clark Counties in order to provide the most up-to-date information regarding their condition, location, and site boundaries." Project funding was provided in part by a 2015 Historic Preservation Fund grant administered by the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office (project number SD-15-030, grant number P15AF00064) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
