The purpose of this Historic Structures Report is to identify significant character-defining architectural features of the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and to provide general guidance for treatment. The building was originally part of the extensive holdings of the Yellowstone Park Hotel Company and is now administrative headquarters for Yellowstone National Park. The current appearance of the hotel building dates to the mid-1930s reconstruction of the entire hotel complex at Mammoth Hot Springs. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel represents one of the Art Deco-style buildings designed in 1936 by Robert Reamer to transform the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel into a "lodge style" facility. Part 1A of this report provides general contextual information pertinent to the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, and Part 1B contains information about the development and use of the hotel site and hotel building. Part 1C documents the existing appearance and condition of the hotel and enumerates its character-defining architectural features. Part 2, on Treatment and Use, provides a recommendation for an appropriate level of preservation treatment for the building, which is a contributing feature in the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District. The proposed level of preservation treatment for the hotel is rehabilitation.
