Cover letter: "Herein, please find the first five chapters of proposed publishable manuscript on the history of the shotgun house in New Orleans. We anticipate that these chapters will be augmented with three more in the following grant cycle, depending, of course, on the wishes of the Division of Historic Preservation and its Grant Evaluation Committee. At the time of the next submission we will submit copies of the entire fully-integrated manuscript. This is because in the writing of the final chapters, we expect to have certain changes and insertions in the earlier chapters being submitted here. We have learned that the completion of a book manuscript is a task which is very difficult to coordinate with a specific set of calendrical deadlines. No chapter is ever as complete, well-worded and well-illustrated as you wish it could be. There is always one more archival source which needs to be tracked down, and one more photograph of a house illustrative of a specific type which needs to be taken. You always hear of specialists who have more knowledge who need to be interviewed. More editing always remains to be done. That is, of course, the status of the present manuscript. We expect that there will be time for some corrections before the final manuscript has been assembled. The current manuscript is, however, a full and complete work which, together with its remaining chapters could successfully be submitted to a publisher. Publishing books of the type of the Creole Cottage and the Shotgun histories, require a great deal of give and take with the publisher and their editors. Experience with the Creole Cottage manuscript, submitted last year, proves that we must expect a considerable amount of re-writing in order to satisfy their editorial and marketing wishes. Our current plans are to submit the completed Shotgun House manuscript, and then begin work on the revisions of both books."
