From project summary: "The purpose of this survey is to further refine the historic context for the Nevada State Prison by identifying specific property types and the distribution of historic properties and non-contributing resources within the Nevada State Prison Historic District proposed for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). This National Register nomination is currently in the final revision stages with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and was submitted to the Board of Museums and History in April, 2015. The survey will also support management decisions that consider the sensitivity of the area in terms of historic preservation concerns and the resulting implications for future land use planning. Information gathered during the reconnaissance survey will prioritize buildings for future planning efforts, including the production of Historic Structures Reports (HSRs) at the NSP. Carson City has requested 2015 Historic Preservation Funding to complete as many HSRs as the funding award will support. An architectural inventory of the Nevada State Prison was originally conducted by Elizabeth Dickey and Jennifer Riddle of the Nevada Department of Transportation on several different occasions between 2010 and 2014. Then, in September of 2014, Dan Pezzoni completed a supplemental inventory at the NSP. As a result of these efforts, a total of 32 architectural resources and 6 sites were identified (Figure 3). Architectural resources consist of 27 buildings and 5 structures. Twenty-seven of the architectural resources are recommended as contributing to the NSP Historic District under Criterion A. Five of the architectural resources are recommended not eligible and non-contributing to the eligibility of the NSP district. Evaluations for individual buildings and structures were completed by JoEllen Ross-Hauer, M.S., who meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards as an architectural historian." Project funding was provided in part by a 2014 Historic Preservation Fund grant to City of Carson City (project number NV-14-010) administered by the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office (grant number P14AF00036) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
