The Perennial Penstemon: Variation in Defensive Chemistry Across Years, Populations, and Tissues
Kelly C and Bowers D. The Perennial Penstemon: Variation in Defensive Chemistry Across Years, Populations, and Tissues. Research Permit and Reporting System
This project examined the chemical defenses of Penstemon virgatus across two non-consecutive growing seasons, six natural populations (including two in RMNP) and three tissue types. Our results indicate that P. virgatus plants contain high concentrations of chemical defenses which were differentially allocated among tissue types. We also quantified leaf herbivore damage at all six pop- ulations but we found very little herbivore damage.
