A San Juan Tapestry: History, Photographs, Memoirs, Hinsdale County and Lake City, Colorado

Introduction: "Tucked away along the eastern edge of the mystical San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, a roughly T-shaped county boasts an amazing geological, social, recreational, and industrial history that continues to add indomitable energy to the “Shining Mountains” in which it lies. In this work, the result of countless volunteer hours and cooperative funding from a National Park Service Preserve America Grant, the Hinsdale County Historical Society, Lake City Downtown Improvement and Revitalization Team (DIRT), Hinsdale County and the Town of Lake City, timeless photography and excerpts from pioneer and present-day oral histories are woven into a captivating, generational tapestry. Only a few images and moments – some seemingly insignificant, others of epic consequence – are included in this book. Yet, when pieced together, the entwined character of this land and the people who have called this place home is preserved on the pages that follow, to be treasured and shared. The Publication: This book is a byproduct of various Hinsdale County and Lake City historical preservation projects. Proceeds will support history education and preservation locally. Photography: Bringing history to life, the images featured in this work were obtained from the Hinsdale County Historical Society and Museum photograph and glass plate negative collections, the Hinsdale County Cultural Resource Survey, the Lake City DIRT Memoirs Project, and private individuals. All images were authorized for one-time use only and cannot be reproduced unless written permission is obtained from the image’s creator or right holder. The plate negative-to-print process is explained in Chapter 9. Historical Text and Oral Histories: Interspersed throughout this book are excerpts from oral histories collected by the Hinsdale County Historical Society as part of an Oral History Project begun in 2004 and by DIRT as part of its Memoirs Project begun in 2009. Also included is historical information quoted with permission or summarized from a variety of sources."
