Survey Report, Glendale Townsite/Catlin Court Historic District

From introduction: "The survey and nomination of the Glendale Townsite/Catlin Court Historic District was sponsored by the Glendale, Arizona Historical Society in conjunction with the Neighborhood Resources Department of the City of Glendale. The purpose of the project was two fold. The first objective was to complete comprehensive survey and inventory of historic buildings located within the project area and to conduct research on the origins and historic background of those buildings. Second, the results of the survey were to form the basis for the preparation of a nomination to the National Register for a historic district encompassing those buildings. The survey area was predetermined by the project sponsors. The area is located in central Glendale and is bounded on the north by Gardenia Avenue and on the south by Palmaire Avenue. The "L" shaped survey area is bounded on the west at mid block between 59th Avenue and 58th Drive south from Gardenia to Myrtle Avenue. From Myrtle south to Palmaire the west boundary is at 59th Avenue. On the east the boundary extends from Gardenia south to Myrtle along 58th Avenue, 'then east along Myrtle to 57th Avenue, and finally south along 57th Avenue to Palmaire. The survey area encompassed seven entire blocks and three partial blocks. There are 84 primary buildings in the area. The Glendale Townsite/Catlin Court Historic District Survey and Nomination was based, in part, on a previous historic property survey completed in 1980. That project, The Glendale Historic Building Survey was prepared by Janus Associates, Inc. for the City of Glendale. Historic buildings documented by that project were included in a larger area of central Glendale. One of the recommendations of the report was the potential designation of a historic district located primarily along historic First Avenue in the original Catlin Court Subdivision. This survey and nomination includes the district recommended in the previous report and also includes a contiguous four block area within the original Glendale Townsite. The desire to undertake this project was predicated on strong local support for the preservation of the unique historic buildings and residential character of the district in the "shadows" of Glendale's commercial and civic center." Funding was provided in part by a 1990 Historic Preservation Fund grant administered by the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (grant number 04-90-50150) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
