From introduction: "This report presents the results of a historic resources study conducted for the City of Glendale between April and September 1993. The project consisted of two components, a historic context statement of the City of Glendale and a reconnaissance level survey of buildings 45 years and older in the southwest section of the City. Boundaries for the survey area were the south side of Colorado Street on the north, the west side of Glendale Avenue on the east, the east side of Central Avenue on the west, and the northeast side of San Fernando Road on the south. A "historic context statement" is an analysis of the dominant themes, patterns, and periods in a locality's past which are physically linked to the present in terms of property types. Historic context statements provide the framework for the identification and evaluation of historic resources in a community. The reconnaissance level survey is the next step in that process of identification and evaluation. In this project, the "reconnaissance level survey" incorporated a site inspection of the study area to locate potential resources which were then photographed, dated, and briefly described in terms of appearance and significance on California Historic Resources Inventory forms. The City contracted with Leslie Heumann and Associates, historic preservation consultants and specialists in the documentation of historic resources, to perform the investigation. Leslie Heumann, an architectural historian, was the project manager and principal surveyor. Teresa Grimes, an independent preservation consultant, researched and wrote the historic context statement. Funding was provided in part by a 1992 Historic Preservation Fund grant administered by the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (04-92-70050) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
