Procedures and Standards Guidebook for Historic Rehabilitation, Cranston Historic District Commission, Cranston, Rhode Island

From introduction: "The following guidelines have been developed by the Cranston Historic District Commission under Section 30-4.1 D of Cranston's Zoning Ordinance. These Standards and Guidelines will serve as a basis of the Historic District Commission's review decisions for granting Certificates of Appropriateness. In harmony with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings, 36 CFR 671, as amended, these Standards and Guidelines help define important features of Cranston's historic districts and provide common sense guidance on the best means of presenting and enhancing the integrity of these features in rehabilitation and new construction projects. The Standards and Guidelines are not hard and fast regulations. They are to be used as flexible criteria. Their purpose is to provide assurance to property owners and the citizens of Cranston that reviews for Certificates of Appropriateness will be based upon clear design standards widely accepted by Federal, State and local historic preservation agencies rather than the taste or preference of individual Commission members. These Standards and Guidelines provide flexibility so that the historical and architectural merit and integrity of the building, structure or appurtenance under review, or its setting within the historic district, can be considered." Funding was provided in part by a 2000 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Portland (project number OR-00-16) administered by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
